The Arrest

by Jonathan Lethem

Published 2020

A lot shorter than I expected, but sort of dense, which makes up for it. Meandering but never off-topic. I love Lethem’s detached, somewhat modern tone: sometimes light, sometimes serious, sometimes funny.

The tone balances out the sort of underwhelming story. I'm generally a fan of character pieces like this, where there's less of a story and more of a situation, but the characters all sort of feel like stereotypes, so they don't really carry it.
